Chromic Acid Flakes is also called Chromium Trioxide or Chromic Acid Anhydride.

This is available in the form of small flakes of dark red or chocolate coloured appearance, which are easy to dissolve in water. It is hygroscopic in nature and forms a saturated of 62.6% CrO3 at 25 degrees Centigrade. Though it is an acid, dilute solutions of it exert a protective action on metal surfaces like mild steel, zinc, aluminum, copper, brass etc. at room temperature, by the formation of a thin passivating film.

Insoluble matter  0.10% Max


Applications


The largest use of Chromic Acid is in the Electroplating Industry. Electrodeposition of chromium bith as decorative and as hard chrome types are done with chromic acid only. Other uses are as dilute solutions for passivating or inhibition on metal surfaces, as an oxidising agent for organic chemicals and as a laboratory re-agent.

Physiological Aspect

Handle all solutions of chromic acid with gloves on. If it comes in contact with any cuts or bruises on the skin, immediate washing of the affected part with a 5% solution of Bisulphite and then with water is recommended to prevent the formation of Chrome sores.
